Invalid MasterKey Exception

User gets this error “Exception of type ‘Microsoft.Office.SecureStoreService.Server.KeyManagement.InvalidMasterKeyException’ was thrown” when trying to create a new encryption key into a Secure Store application service in SharePoint 2013.

This issue has been reported to Microsoft Technet. So the recommended solution according to this forum is to again re-attempt and try to re-create a new Encryption key or restore the secure store database.

However another method is to use Power Shell to update the encryption key, as recommended here and here.

The Power Shell script to run it on the SharePoint application server farm is below:

$newPassPhrase = “abcDEF123!”

$secureStore Get-SPServiceApplicationProxy | Where {$_.GetType().Equals([Microsoft.Office.SecureStoreService.Server.SecureStoreServiceApplicationProxy])}

Update-SPSecureStoreApplicationServerKey -ServiceApplicationProxy $secureStore -Passphrase $newPassPhrase
